WHY BICHONS
The Bichon Frise is considered a great all-around pet as they are playful yet gentle. While Bichons are active dogs, they don’t need too much room to roam due to their small stature, making them suitable for unit or apartment living. Bichons generally have a lifespan of 12-15 years.

HOW WE OPERATE
Family-owned and operated by John and Christine Kellow, Pinefields takes pride in top quality, pedigree breeding. As a small kennel, we operate purely with the best interest of each puppy in mind, taking care to ensure that each breeding pair is a top-quality match to produce the best dogs for showing.
We believe in creating a nurturing environment for all of our litters with each dog becoming part of the family here at Pinefields. Our care extends beyond the puppies’ time with us as we take extra care in home selection and application approvals, to ensure our dogs go on to great homes.
A HISTORY OF BICHONS
A little known fact is that the Bichon breed has actually been around for centuries - since the 1300s! Here’s a few other fun facts about the Bichon Frise.
Bichons actually hail from Mediterranean ancestry, making their way from the Canary Islands to the Island of Tenerife, where the particular Bichon Tenerife breed (now Bichon Frise) got its name.
Bichons are often confused with poodles because they have a common ancestry from the Barbet, or Water Spaniel, known as Barbichon (later shortened to Bichon). Other Bichon breeds include the Bolognese, Havanese and Maltese.
The elaborate French nature gave way to the fluffy show dog style we see today, the “lion style” as it was once called.
These dogs attracted the attention of nobility and travelling middle class merchants and even King Henry III.
The Bichon inspired the French verb bichonner which means to make beautiful, to pamper.
Bichons gradually lost their popularity and became trick dogs in circuses, and it wasn’t until soldiers from World War I took these dogs home as pets that they were introduced to the rest of the world outside of Europe. This eventually led to the introduction of Bichons in American Kennel shows and the establishment of particular national clubs under which official judging standards were given.
